Squires Kitchen Exhibition

This was where I chose to visit last week to have a day of professional development and inspiration for my cake business. Travelling over an hour and a half to Squires Kitchen HQ in Farnham Surrey was well worth the time and effort. (See the coffee was a priority on arrival!) The trade stands were all set out to tempt with new and trusted products – a sweetie shop for cake makers! I had gone with a mission – to improve my sugar figure making so I booked onto the 2 hour course……I may share this with you once it is finished. The course was fantastic and I think that along with the two books I purchased, I will be able to make even better models for my cakes.

I was tempted by the ‘sweetie shop’ and managed to find coloured sugarpastes, modelling pastes and flower cutters in preparation for this summer’s wedding cake orders. Then I went to see the wedding cake exhibits by other cake makers and was wowed by their skill, variety and versatility. The cake makers in attendance that day were all very happy to talk about their cakes and one lady led to my purchase of a new ‘toy’ for my kitchen. Labour saving and engaging with my need for perfection in the preparation and finish of my cakes, the cake leveller/cutter will save me so much wasted cake and make my spirit level redundant. Brilliant find!

Here are two of the most amazing cakes that I saw there – the first was just so perfectly finished and even close up it is flawless…..(Credit Bellissimo Cakes, Farnham):

This one was a competition cake – theme was mini wedding cakes and this was no more than 4″ across. I cannot credit anyone as it only had a number beside it, but the detail was incredible:

So a very worthwhile professional development day spent in an inspiring environment where the bar is set very high, as it should be. I have learned a lot and found new inspiration for my future cake designs.
